Learn new skills and gain more knowledge for management
One of the first things you can consider doing would be to gain as much knowledge as possible. This could be done in various different ways. You could take on extra learning and look into something like an engineering management masters to help you gain the grounding you need for the next move. Or you could even shadow your current managers and learn on the job. That is if they are happy with that. You can pick things up by listening, by watching and by physically learning and they can all give you different skills to take on board.Look for the career path
It is no good deciding that you want more from your job but not having the faintest clue on the direction that you want to take. You need to look for the right career path for you so that you can make it happen. It is as simple as looking for the chain of command. There could even be a few different ones that specialise in different areas. You can then decide which option would be best for you and focus your attention on working towards it.Consider working abroad
Maybe the best career move you could make would be to move abroad. There are some countries that would welcomes the skills you do have to work in their country, and in many cases the rates of pay can be a lot higher. Working abroad could give you other experiences such as different culture and living in a different country that the whole family could get on board with. It could certainly be life changing.Have confidence in yourself and your own ability
Finally, you do need to have the confidence in yourself and your own ability to make it happen. It is no good considering the career path you want to take or even looking into working abroad and masking the steps for that to happen, if you don’t have the confidence to make it happen and believe in your ability to be able to do it. Confidence can come in different ways. It can come from positive affirmations that you are doing your current job well, or having the right level of support around you.I hope that highlighting some of these steps will help you make an informed decision regarding the next steps with your engineering career.
