As technology improves, virtual work is increasing. More people than ever before are saying goodbye to the office-based 9 to 5 and embracing a new form of employment.

Remote working is growing at a rapid rate. According to the latest data, around 50 percent of US workers now do some form of remote work, with 20 to 25 teleworking regularly. Furthermore, 80 to 90 percent of US workers would prefer to work remotely - something that gives them freedom for where to live and when they work.

Of course, it’s not all good news. While remote working eliminates some of the time getting to and from work, some employers are worried that it will lead to lower productivity and a lower quality of output.

The trick, therefore, is to employ virtual team best practices: strategies recommended in the group and HR literature that help companies get the best from their remote teams, even if they’re not under the direct control of management.

As the following infographic points out, one of the biggest problems is that companies don’t make regular calls to “check-in” on their employees. When people have to show their faces at a physical location, they have no choice but to interact with colleagues and get on with their work. In the remote environment, that’s not the case.

There’s also the issue of resolving language differences, which is becoming increasingly important as businesses seek people from global talent pools.

Do you operate a remote team? Read this infographic for stats, data, and tips and tricks to get the best from your people.
